I bought a wd45 and the seller said his son hooked up the battery the wrong way and must have burned up the switch. Its a 12 volt system.. My question is . IS THAT POSSIBLE?

The starter (or switch) doesnt care which way the battery is connected.

A conversion. It has a alternator.

Alternators can be ruined by reverse polarity. starters are immune. the diodes in an alternator pass current one way, and block it the other way. a reversed battery can near instantly flood destructive current through those diodes. Jim

If you connect a battery backwards in an old tractor like that NOTHING will happen until you start the engine and the generator begins to charge with a polarity opposite that of the battery connections.

When the cutout points close the battery will ''win'' the battle and swap the polarity of the generator.

Sometimes nothing bad happens, sometimes the cutout points get welded together and discharge the battery through the generator after then engine is shutdown.

This ''lets the smoke out'' of the generator, and possibly some wiring and the ammeter.

It shouldn't directly affect the ignition switch, though, but the ignition switch MAY not be getting power because of the wiring and/or ammeter damage.

As a side note, you mention it being a 12 Volt system, I'm not sure if the late WD45's may have been 12 Volt, or is this a 12 Volt conversion?

The WD45s with gasoline engine were all 6v, however the WD45 Diesels were all 12v,

No factory 12V WD45's. 6V three brush DR generator with cut out.
