Allis 180 Shift Rod - Dr. Allis?

Hi again folks,

Another question - probably for for Dr.
Allis, but maybe someone else knows too.
I've managed to avoid any 3rd/4th gear
popping out issues, but I've always been
scared (petrified, actually) that these
issues may pop up (no pun intended) at some
point.

I seem to recall Dr. Allis posting a while
ago about an Allis service bulletin re:
welding up the detent hole position in the
shift rod, and grinding/drilling a new hole
slightly further down-stream to get more
gear engagement and help it stay in gear.
There were also some notes about using
heavier detent springs, and replacing the
shift fork because new ones are a little
thicker and less likely to bend.

Would it make sense for me to do this pre-
emptively as a precaution? And if so, does
anyone know how much more down-stream the
new detent hole should be made?

I love this tractor - would hate for
anything to happen to it. If a new shift
fork, some springs, and some time re-
working the rod would helps safeguard any
issues it sounds like money and time well
spent to me.

A deep engagement shift rail is p/n 70261443. A new 3-4 shift fork with thicker tangs is p/n 70261385. These two parts are from AGCO and are a drop in improvement to your question. If you choose to change your existing shift rail detent, I change them .125" deeper for 4th gear. I always use one 70229458 spring to put inside the existing detent spring to make it stiffer. I have no idea what has ever been done to your particular tractor. If you shift it into 8th gear detent and then can pull back even farther on the gearshift, then a deeper engagement is possible. They never jump out of gear for any reason other than people grinding them into gear all the time. Eventually, the shifting dogs are so chewed up there's nothing left to hold them in gear.

Thank you Dr. Allis. As usual your thoroughness and expertise are unparalleled.

I've always tried to baby my transmission, knowing that grinding is the cause of these
problems. But I have no idea what PO's might have done. Knowing my luck it would let go when
someone else is working for me heading downhill with a big load, so I think I'll do these
changes as a precaution.

Dr. Allis, I have been following the AC forum and some others on Yesterday's Tractors for some years and I want to say your knowledge and willingness to help is
impressive. Tom
