I need to replace the ring gear on a 1948 C, so went about setting up to split the tractor. When I started moving the rear end away
from the engine the shaft came out of the transmission instead of out of the pilot bearing. So, I think I have two big problems,
how do I get the shaft out of the pilot bearing and then how do I get it back in the transmission? I couldn't be so lucky that the
shaft would just slip back into the transmission. Any suggestion greatly appreciated.

If you are talking about the torque tube drive shaft, it's a simple spline on each end and should easily slide out of either end. There is a sleeve coupler at the tranny side.

Yes, it is the torque tube and watching a you tube I see that the connection to the tranny was splined into a coupling and would be
easy to install. The end with the pilot bearing is the one that won't come out easy. I'll have to figure out a way to get some way
to pull on it. What I can't figure out is what could be holding it.

Corrosion, or galled up where the input shaft fits into the pilot bushing. If I remember correctly the OEM setup here is an oil wick from the end of the crankshaft to "wick" oil onto the pilot bushing. Possibly dried up or non existent. Too long, too short, or missing from last rebuild. Can eliminate with the use of an oilite bushing
