Have recently bought a G that hasn't run in 15 years or so. Engine is loose and the tractor is mostly complete, with cultivators and a belly mower. It looks like the generator has been replaced with a one wire
12 volt alternator. Looks like the coil has been replaced, and has the original distributer and starter. I have been told the 6 volt starter will be fine. My question is do you keep the positive ground and the
negative cable to the starter?? It looks like the wire from the alternator has been attached to the starter main post. That doesn't look right to me. Would like to try and turn it over with the starter, but
not sure about the wiring Thanks, M

Alternator means it is Negative ground and if you hook it up backwards the alternator will start to smoke big time

Starters are designed to turn the same way no matter the polarity. Negative ground is just fine. Jim

Thats what I needed to know. Thanks. Just started evaluating this little tractor. Have restored a couple crawlers over the years; my first rubber tired tractor. Another question... It does have a belt pully on the side. How is it controlled?? On all the time except when you push the clutch in??

The pulley is driven off a short shaft that is also a reduction to the transmission input. It can't be disengaged so it will run whenever the clutch is engaged.

The large stud output from the alternator is electrically connected to the battery. In your case, to the battery cable on the starter terminal. The connection from the alternator could also go through an amp gauge to show alternator output current.

Thanks for the quick reply's. Have just started looking things over . Will probably have a lot of questions before its done. One thing I have noticed is the lack of any grease fittings. I guess AC used sealed bearings everywhere. Unusual there isn't any on the steering components or lift linkage though...

One of the bragging points in the original owners manual was that there were no grease fittings to worry with!
I dont believe Allis thought that 75 years later theyd still be around and in use!

I have PDFs of the parts, owners, and service manuals that you are welcome to, if wanted, shoot me an email and theyre on the way

Joe

The only manual i dont have is the owners manual. Would appreciate the PDF of the owners manual. Thank You!! M

I remember my CA manual mentioning (bragging?) there are no grease fittings on this tractor. It made for an efficient tractor running everything in light oil. But my tractor was 68 years old when I got it and it leaked like a sieve--especially out of the steering system. I nicknamed it the Titanic. I am the same age as that tractor. I leak a little too.

Have drained all the oil and was happy to see no water, just dirty oil. The manual says 30 weight. Detergent or non detergent?? Or should I just use a 10-30??? As far as the Trans/ gearcase I would guess a gear 90 ???? I would guess this engine has not run in 20 years. I took the head off and all looks surprisingly clean and tight... M
