D17 Series IV Diesel

I bought this at an auction, they said it ran but the fuel stop on the pump wasnt working. I fixed that little problem but the engine would not turn over, took starter out and bench tested it, it was good. Now I was worried engine was froze but luckily it turns freely. Now to the question, I decided to pull the tractor (pop start) to start it without the starter ( in 4th high selected) when I let the clutch out one rear tire turns backwards. Nothing seems bound up, even in gear with power director in neutral the tractor will roll just fine, or if I have clutch pushed in with it in any gear and power director engaged it rolls fine, could it be the engine has such good compression its causing the rear wheel to do this not allowing me to pop start it? My Series 3 Diesel doesnt do this, any suggestions? Also I pulled out the injectors to have less resistance with compression and the rear wheels did the same thing, moving in opposite directions, what would be the cause of this?

Sounds like the transmission is locked up if you can turn the motor over. It might be stuck in two gears, you would need to pull the shifter and move the shift rails into neutral.

If one or both of the clutch packs in the Power Director is stuck, that could cause that. Try pulling it in Low range.

If you had the transmission in 4th, power director clutch in high side, and foot clutch depressed fully, and the tractor rolls freely, there is absolutely nothing wrong with the driveline. Nothing !! You say the engine is free, but I'll bet you didn't actually turn it over TWO COMPLETE revolutions, right ??? It's an engine issue or you're sliding bald rear tires on gravel.

As per your own words, there's nothing wrong with the driveline. And if the engine has been turned over two full revolutions, it should be free enough. More weight on the rear wheels and on hard surface. Doesn't have a loader on it, does it ?? Pull the starter out of it so there's no chance the starter drive isn't locked into the ring gear.

when you say turn 3to 4 times you mean complete revolutions right. next if someone is there to help disengage pto and power director in neutral and trans in neutral see if pto turns by hand. if it does does it turn if you put pto in gear but hold foot clutch down. remember the hyd pump is live off of back side of flywheel and turns all times motor turns. when you turned motor was it correct direction. it is possible the output from pump is hydro locking it somehow if it can't flow away from it!! good luck and keep us posted so we learn from this also.

Just how are you "turning the engine over" ??? You cannot do it by grabbing the fan blades and pulling on them.

Quit simple, with the starter. The
battery was weak but definitely
turning the motor over. Hence I
took out the starter again to try
and pop start it, just in case the
starter was sticking.
