Found a D17 for sale locally. My son is looking for a tractor to use on his hay operation. I believe it is a series one tractor and would be used to pull a square baler and a rake. Are these good tractors? Ive heard the series 4 is the one to get

Yes, D17's are very good tractors. For his purposes it will work well. A series 4 is considered the best version to get since it has factory 3-point hitch and a better hydraulic setup. From the sounds of it neither of those options are needed for your son's operation. The only downside of the series one that I can think of is that they did not have power steering. It may have been an option, but I have yet to see a series one with it.

Power steering was an option on ALL D-17 series, even the series 4 !! I've seen three older D-17's that did not have power steering in the last 50 years, so most have it. Factory 3 point hitch was also an OPTION on series 4 tractors as snap-coupler was standard equipment. They are a great tractor for what you want to do. Just remember they are more than 50 years old, so how well they've been taken care of is important.

Dad's 58 D17 Diesel had power steering & WFE. I think he ordered it that way because he also got the 4-row mounted cultivator, which is quite heavy.
That was our main tractor for ~ 10 yrs. Never had a problem with the PS. Sure was less tiring than the ol' WC for field work.
