D14 polarize generator

Hi, I obtained a D14 late last fall that had not run in several years, noticed that the previous owner had the 6V battery hooked up to negative ground. I eventually got it to start but it showed negative charge on the ammeter. I switched it to positive ground, now it shows nothing on the ammeter when it is running. My son suggested I need to polarize the generator. How do I do that. there are two terminals on the (delco) generator. Thanks for any help.

Be aware from the diagram which Jim has posted that if the voltage regulator is difficult to get at, you can use a long wire to go from the battery to the generator.

HI, thanks for the help, so I would Jumper from the neg post of battery to the A lug on the generator? Which is the A lug? thanks.

Should be stamped into the generator case next to the terminal. On some AC's, the 'gen', or 'arm' wire is heavier than the field wire. Don't know about the D14.
