spin out wheel wrench

used to spin wheels in and out for cultivating as a
kid on dad's WD. Got a D-12 that I'd like to move
the wheels in a bit. Got all the lugs loose just
fine, but can find nothing to fit the 9/16" square
bolt on the sliders. Crescent won't do it. What do
you guys use... a special A/C wrench? And where
from? Thanks

Simple open end wrench is all I have ever used. Sorry them fit all wrenches are for wannabes and are made to get you by. Yes I have a crescent wrench that is on my key ring and yes it has gotten me out of a lot of things but when I want to do real work I get a true wrench in the correct size

I use an 8 point socket and extension with a breaker bar. Retired mechanic.

In a pinch try a 12 point socket. If a 5/8" or 11/16" doesn't fit, go to your metric set, 16 or 17mm should be close enough.
Shouldn't need to loosen any lug bolts.

I think the square bolt head on the d-12 is a 1/2". Sometimes people imitate apes, and hammer on things they don't understand! Hammering mushrooms the head. What I use is an old chinese 4" extension, with a 1/2" socket welded to the male end, backwards. If that doesn't move it, rotate the clamp to the top, and remove the 2 5/8" carriage bolts, that hold the clamp to the center, and slide it out. Put it in a vice, coat liberally with your favorite penetrating oil. and hit the cam screw with an impact gun, backwards, and forwards. Note it is not really a screw, just a cam. Once you get it moving, pop the snap ring off the back, pull the cam out, and apply never seize liberally, and re-assemble. Don't lose the rail rider, that goes between the cam, and rail!

Yep, DiyDave, it IS 1/2" and with an extender over it, got everything to move. Am looking for an 8 pt socket set, 'cause I've got 7 Allis's. Thanks for the help.

That should be 12cpoint socket which are common as dirt. The 6 point do not work well on square head stuff but the 12 point do just fine but is it is say a 1/2 inch you need a 9/16 or 5/8s on it.

D10/12, and the CA's with spin outs are the only ones, that I know of that use the 1/2" square. D14 and up, came with a dual hex head, budd type adjusting wrench and handle. And they were bigger hex heads on the bigger tractors.

An 8 pt socket will work. I got my set from Cornwell. AC did make a square wrench for this. They sometimes come up on ebay. I bought one for my dad for his WD.

To make them a little easier to turn, the last time I had the wheels off my D-14, I drilled and tapped the cam bolts (if that's what they're called)and put in grease zerks. Now if I can remember to keep them greased

Try a 1/2" impact extension. You can tap it on with a hammer and not injure the bolt head.
