WD-45 shifter issues

Just picked up a nice looking WD-45 gas tractor from a widow, whose late husband last parked it in their garage some 5 years ago. We winched it onto the trailer but when we got home it had a few issues. First, no trouble starting. But when you place it in gear, all you hear is a humming sound---no grinding. It went into reverse and drove. After trying different forward gears, sometimes it would begin to drive, but go 30 feet and slow to a stop. Same thing happens if the hand clutch is used---the humming sound when it doesn't move when in gear. Please help. I want to use this for haying this summer. And thank you to all my Allis respondants.

The first thing to check is the Oil in all the compartments. Humming sounds like the clutch is slipping. I am sure people will have better suggestions?? Cleddy

Odd problem, put the PTO in gear and have somebody watch it while you try to move it. If the PTO does not turn when the tractor does t move there is troubles from the hand clutch forward. If the PTO does run when the tractor is not moving your troubles are from the hand clutch back. You do have the hand clutch pulled back correct?

Thanks to both of you for your response. Since it's 11 below zero right now here in NY, I'll probably have to wait for a brief warm up to try your suggestion Butch. and yes to having the hand clutch properly engaged/disengaged. Will it help to tell you, after I posted this, I did drive it BUT had to literally hold the shifter in gear. When I let go, it doesn't pop out of gear, but rather smoothly and quietly comes out of gear.
