can someone tell me what generator should be on my 1952 ca allis. I have seen generators with regulators and generators with cut outs being called out. I would like to put the correct one on it.
thanks

1952 should have a 6-volt Delco Remy 3 brush generator with a cutout, polarized to positive ground. Some did have Auto-lites but if replacement was needed, they were replaced with Delco Remy, per the parts book. 1101413 is one Delco generator number used.

1867781 is one Delco Remy cutout number. You will also need to make sure you have the proper light/charge switch as that controls the charge rate of the three brush generator.

The light/charge switch number for yours should be 70208197. This site shows having and aftermarket cutout and switch. They don't show the generator but may have it if you call them. That is one source, there are others. You will have to do some hunting if you want Delco Remy as those are discontinued items in the DR system. AGCO may have the switch.

I went that same path, keeping all original, on a 55 Ferguson TO35 that was my family's often used utility tractor. It was always a marginal starting tractor, if the battery was less than 95% tip top shape with polished contacts, then you'd have to throw the battery charger on it.

Knowing that, I replaced everything on the electrical system except the generator. New wiring. Still got the same worry of 'is it going to spin just fast enough to start?' Even with a new starter. I warned the tractor that if it gave me any problems in the winter I'd switch it to 12volt...

So this fall just as snow was showing up I bought a 52 Allis WD and needed the Ferguson to lift off the brush hog I got with it. While idling, waiting for the trailer to get ready for unloading, the tractor stopped. I had to tow it out of the way and switch implements with another tractor. Everything looked good the next day in the warm weather, and I'd heard those old generators won't charge below a certain rpm (don't idle).

So I bought the small 12v generator with internal regulator the hot rod guys use and a new 12v coil with an internal resistor and put a 12v battery I had in there. Now that Ferguson starts like a brand new fighter jet and it's ready to go. Even at 6degF to push snow.

I've already warned that new Allis WD that it better behave or this spring when I'm going through the tune up I'll switch it over from 6v pos ground to 12v neg ground too.

So if you are fixing a tractor to do regular work then I'd suggest researching the 12v conversions. Parade or restoration show tractors can sacrifice some dependability for authenticity, if going that path.
