Allis Chalmers B Generator mounting

Hey Yall
I just purchased a Allis Chalmers B and cant make heads or tails of a few things.

First, the tractor has a starter and a generator. I have seen other Bs with mounting bracket holes or bolts in the block. My tractor has no way to properly mount the generator bracket. Right now its mounted on a homemade bracket that attached to a bolt near the oil pan. Did this model have a special mounting bracket or do I just need to weld two bolts onto the block?

Second, The magneto has five wires coming out of it. Four for the plugs and one for the coil. I thought the mag provides power so a coil isnt needed. What am I missing here.

Thank You

Are you saying it has an external round can coil hooked to the mag?? If you are some one set it up to use the mag like a distributor due to a bad coil in the mag

I asked a similar question the other day but was still confused about why the magneto has a place for five wires. Yes the coil is a can type coil.

You have an early B before Allis Chalmers offered electric start or lights so no need for a generator. The
magneto has 5 wires because it was home modified to use an external coil, probably because the original
magneto failed.

I like your idea of welding bolt heads to the block. Needs to be carefully done.

Probably an IH J-4 mag which will work on the A/C tractor and they have an external wire going to the mag coil which can be removed and hooked to an external coil so the mag can be used as a distributor

There is usually a name and numbers stamped in the side of the mag. Are there any on yours?

Appears to be the correct mag for that B just some one rigged it to work as a distributor

A mag and no generator would have zero wires to diagram assuming it also has no battery. Even if it had electric start, that's a single cable down to the starter off the battery.

Real hard to say since you don't know how it has been wired up since your not likely to be able to ask the guy who did it
