I'm new to this site - my experience is w/Fords. A while back I brought a '52 G home & am about to start some needed TLC. It runs OK, but has a rattling/clunking noise in the tranny, especially in 3rd gear. I have an I&T AC-11 Manual, an AC Service Manual, & an AC Parts Catalogue (August 1954). I have been reading but wonder if I need to pull the engine just to see if I can find the problem. Any advice is very welcome! Thanks!

If you know the noise is in the transmission I think I would first remove the battery box and take the side off the tranny and have a look and see if anything is obviously
broken. Drain the oil out first as it will pour out when you pull the side off.may be a gear with broken teeth. You should be able to see if it is. They are neat little tractors
for sure.

If you have a PTO/Belt Drive, check for in-out end play. There should be none. If there is end play, it can make a lot of noise.

Pulling the engine on those is easy but you have to pull off the adapter housing to see into the diff/transmission. There is a short reduction gear shaft in that housing
that could be making the noise. Mine makes kind of a squealing sound there when the trans fluid gets low.
