hydraulic lift fill up

ahem: when i fill the hydraulic lift, does it make any difference, which way the lift is situated, up or down?

i do not see this question answered in the manual. maybe i over looked it.
 
normally you have the cylinders retracted.... If they are extended and you fill, then retract, you
could push TOO MUCH oil back into the tank / housing.
 
On page 7 of my WD manual under "Lubrication and Service Guide" it says: Keep filled to high mark on bayonet gauge with rams extended. It also says: When using hydraulic operated machinery other than manufactured by Allis-Chalmers, do not use rams with more than 40 cu. in. capacity.
