ac 51 b lot of play between forward gears and reverse

i have a 51 allis b , it has a lot of play when you go from forward gears to reverse or rev. to forward, feels like wear in whichever gears involved, i know nothing about this tractors transmission. what does correcting this problem entail, complete tear down? this tractor will be in runs only but would be nice to have this tightened up. all info appreciated

i dont think so both my hubs are now tight, with wheels up there is no play pubshing and pulling from sides or top. maybe the splines on the other ends of wheel axels are worn, can transmission be inspected without major teardown?

If I understand you correctly, you are talking about shift lag or delay when rocking the tractor, if so then your shift delay is caused by your loose wheel hub , worn axle splines or the ring and pinion are out of adjustment. I would recommend fixing your hub and go from there. Your transmission should not have anything to do with this, what little free play may be in the tranny to cause shift delay would be caused by bad bearings which would in turn howl and be very noticeable when warmed up and turning at full speed. Shifting could also be difficult do to misalignment.

The only inspection you can do on the tranny requires draining the tranny fluid and removing the cover on right side of transmission. Once cover is removed you should be able to see everything and be able watch shaft rotation and grab the shafts to check for slop.

(quoted from post at 19:56:00 07/30/21) ring and pinion out of adjustment , could you elaborate on that.

Can you better define what you mean by a lot of play when you go from forward to reverse and reverse to forward? The tractor should be stopped when making those gear changes. Are you talking about feeling a lot of play in the gear shift lever when you make those gear changes?

i think the splines on the outer rear wheel axel are tight but what about the other end of the rear wheel axels are there splines there and can they be tightened or is there a way to take play out of the connection at the drive gear. i need to find a tutorial on the inner end of rear wheel axels.

The attached manual can explain it better than me. Start reading at paragraph 200. Pinion backlash/bearing preload is done by tightening the nut on end of pinion shaft. Transmission bearing backlash/preload is done with shims. You may improve drive ability by adding a shim or tightening a nut BUT per the manual all gear meshing is FIXED so replacing worn gears or bearings is the only way to truly fix your problem. That is IF the slop is found to be in the tranny or differential.

say you are going forward slowly in first gear and you stop put it in reverse and let the clutch out, there is a clunk and then
movement in reverse?

how did you fix the slop in the splines of the hub... If you have slop that is normally 95% of the problem........ Internal to the transmission can not have slop in the gears... If someone took the bevel gear set apart and shimmed it wrong going together, there could be slop... but that is very unlikely.

Did you see my post with the attached B repair manual. It explains how to replace any transmission and final drive parts. If you are wondering if you can replace any parts through the transmission cover, I believe the answer is no, you will at the very least have to split the tractor between the transmission and the rear end.

Have somebody stand beside the tractor and watch the nut and wheel as you change direction. They need to watch closely. If you didn't grind the back of the wheel the hub it is still moving on the splines in spite of ading a washer and they will be able to see it.
