Gleaner F and F2

I found an old post that said the all parts are interchangeable except the one you need. I'm wondering if it's a safe bet that the grain and corn heads from an f2 at an upcoming auction will fit on a F?

Yes....and no. While the throat opening is the same, you will need the quick tach hooks and bar on either to make it fit. There were also small differences in the drive set up, but easy enough to make one fit the other. Now, if the grain head is also a flex head, you may have a few more differences to deal with. Observation should tell you what you may or may not need.

I think that's going to depend Ben. My niece's husband bought an F over the weekend. He said it a 76. It has the same quick latches that my 77 K2 has.

But his throat would be wider....most heads are drilled for wide hook up like an F and narrower hook ups like your K and simply bolt in an extra baffle sheet on the header to fit the smaller throat. Then the drives have to line up with the narrower throat on the K, easily done with the correct jackshafts and sprockets. Much more work to make a header from an M series fit the F and K series, some just can't be adapted. Gleaner wasn't exactly leading the pack in header interchange!

Right, but the heads on Chad's late F have those spring loaded latches that you push in and lift instead of those blocks that have two half inch bolts in them like the early F and the Gs had.

The older series had those top and bottom on the feeder house. Those quick tach hooks/ bar eliminated the upper latches and were a godsend! My M3 has the same hookup but the upper attatchment is different...and harder to line up. Punched a hole in the bottom of the grain head when it shifted on the header wagon as I fumbled to get it lined up.....doh!

We upgraded to an F2 from an F machine 17 years ago.The new-to -us F2 came with a 15' grain table, the old F went with a 13 footer and the original F's Orange 4/30 corn head was updated to a BLACK 430 while still using the F. No issues with any of the heads connecting :)

The first model F's were in 1967 and weren't quick-attach. They had the four spring loaded latches in each corner. By 1972 ?? they were quick attach and would have remained that way until the last of the F-3 combines in 1985 or 86. The real issue is what age of grain head and which kind of header height control is used. The grain head will fit, but your hydraulics may not be compatible without making changes.

I never was around one of those with the spring loaded push in type latch top and bottom both, but I see what you mean now. My K2 has the slots at the top for it. The first F that I ran had those bolt on blocks at the bottom, but I don't remember anymore what the top was like. I don't remember it having those latches though. I thought they were the pipe and hanger type like my K2 has. Not ruling out that there was a third option.

our old dealer use to tell us that you need serial # because them engineers at the plant changed something every damn night!!! newer f2 heads will fit all older model f. must older F s had the GENIE header control (cable to hyd valve on side of cab for grain head ) Sold a 13' head to mount on late model straight F once. NO HEADER CONTROL VALVE !! went to local junkyard and got what we needed for a couple hundred bucks. we was all smiles!!!
