200 allis Hi Lo shifting problem

the 200 I have sometimes won't engage into high and when you go to engage it back into low it jumps into it. What would cause this?

It's been so long, I just can't remember, but it seems like the spool in that valve might be spring loaded. That spool valve should slide smoothly through the valve body. You can check that out by locating the valve and unhooking the linkage. It sure sounds like it's sticking.

There are two pressure test ports on the Power Director valve. Pressures must be 300 psi minimum at full throttle in LOW and HIGH ranges. Start there first. Test ports are 1/8" pipe threads. Use a 500 psi gauge.

Again, I don't remember particulars. That spool comes out of that valve, but I don't remember how. I don't recall if the valve has to come off of the tractor or not. Certainly something like penetrating oil, and/or a very fine abrasive cloth to clean/polish is in order.

Remove valve assembly from the tractor. There are TWO valve types depending on the tractor s/n. Either way, remove the spool, and polish it up. Take very fine emery cloth 8 inches long and wrap it lengthwise around a piece of 3/8" or 1/2" redi-bolt and polish the inside of the valves bore using penetrating oil and compressed air and brake kleen, etc. A lightly oiled spool must be able to slide freely in the bore. Remember, that spool was assembled into the valve body, so it can be removed, but each type valve is different from the other. There is also an oil seal on the one end that may need to be replaced.
