What do you guys use for sealant on pipe thread drain plugs on your ACs? Will regular pipe dope or teflon tape hold up or will oils get past them?

Thanks

I've never used anything. They should seal up with out anything unless there have some sort of damage to them and in that case I'd use silicone gasket maker

Thanks old, I never had either, but I have one that just won't seal on a wd45. It is not leaking badly but I have to change the gear oil and thought I would try to get it to seal up better. I don't want to crank on that old metal too hard and break something. A couple of the plugs had remnants of something that was red on the threads, I don't know what or how old the stuff was.

Thanks again,
Mike

Good chance it is one of the many colors of silicone sealer. Unless it was super hard to remove and then it could have been red lock tite

Years ago red lead was used as a sealant and in paints. Personal choice but I would use a pipe sealant, not silicone/RTV on a pipe plug.

I use Teflon tape on all my ancient old pipe fitting joints like that. If you want to be proper they do make a special teflon tape for natural gas or petroleum duties which would be better to use but I have never had the plain ole regular stuff fail on me either.

When I use tape I am always careful to start the tape a thread or two back from the very end on the fitting so that way there is no danger of any of the tape getting into the hydraulic or oil system. Also makes it easier to clean the old tape out if the joint when comes time to take said joint apar some time in the futuret.
