i just bought what i think is a b tractor , the front axel is made of pipes the ser. number is under the seat and is 204645, is it a b or c?, it has a twelve volt battery but what looks like the original generator, will this generator charge a 12v battery?, i know nothing about magnetos, but that year should have a magneto. am i right in assuming that the 12v battery is ok to start and then the tractor runs on the magneto and the battery is doing nothing unless i turn on lights?. but will eventually run down. qnd lqstly doe they sell an alternator kit for this tractor. long message i know but until my manual gets here im clueless. the front axel is not straight cqst iron that im used to seeing. looks fragile , is there a reason for this design?

On the B and C the serial number if just forward of the shiftier. If it is a B it will start with a B if a C it will start with a C. Most Bs have a wish bone front axle and most C a narrow front end

As old posted the serial number is just forward of the shift lever. It is [u:963b05c8a9]stamped[/u:963b05c8a9] into a smooth area. If you found raised numbers cast to the component, it is just a casting number for that component. Also I don't think the serial numbers for Bs or Cs went near to that high.

A stock 6 volt generator will not properly charge a 12 volt battery.

Identification of what you have will be needed first, to properly answer your other questions. Most of the time new users need 5 or more posts on record to post pictures. Make a few posts down on the Test Forum trying to attach pictures. Or go to site comments and make a post asking YT Support to allow you to post pictures. Size has to be less than 7MB whether just one picture or the total of several in a post.

im not good at computers but i will try and post pictures to help id this tractor.will it hurt the tractor to run it off the magneto ? i think im only using the 12v battery for starting, it runs good no smoke plenty of power. not plowing or anything.

Will it hurt to run it off the mag HECK no it will not hurt a thing. There's hundreds of thousands of tractor out there that have used mags for over 100 years now

The magneto is self contained, it doesn't require an electrical system to work.

Did you find a serial number stamped in the top of the housing, near the gear shift lever? (Picture borrowed from OK Tractor)

Does your look like these?

if you were me would you go back to 6volt amd rework the generator if needed or put an alternator on it to charge the 12 volt battery i appreciate the input

I'd go with 12 volts since the 12 volt batteries are cheaper and easier to find plus easier to charge. Also a Delco 10SI alternator like what is one a 1980 Chevy pickup no power any thing no AC is cheap and easy to wire up and will last for years and if you buy from O'Reilly's they have a life time warranty

yes thats the tractor , found serial number B117243 mine differs only in the seat, it isnt a bench seat, it i s single seat that
slides and has a cushioned back,i need the exhaust extension and flapper, the color is reddish im going to paint it original color
thanks for info. one other thing will one shop manual be all i need or do i need an operators manual or are they together. again thanks

That is a loaded question and will get answers both ways.

It ran for many years with a 6 volt system and will work now; if repaired and maintained properly. It also helps to install 2/0 battery cables with the ground cable end as near the starter as possible.

Going to 12 volts gives better lights if it is used at night, battery life may be better, smaller battery cables are ok. The starter should be rebuilt to 12 volts to lessen the risk of damage to the starter, the engagement is often more severe due to the increased voltage, but it will work on 12 volts as is. For an alternator some are using the Denso or other small case alternators instead of the Delco 10 - 12 SI styles, just a matter of what one chooses.

You still haven't answered the serial number question or if the pictures look like your tractor.

You answered the tractor questions as I was typing, thanks.

The manuals for the B are small and there are some free on line you can download. It will take a few minutes to get you the links to them.

Link to the OEM service manual: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1nvxDDuq8gSc9ex2Y4n4wH3OWvMt8Foeb/view

Link to an I&T shop manual: https://www.manualslib.com/products/Allis-Chalmers-B-3715891.html

There is an Operator's manual but I don't have a link that one. I believe the store for this site sells them. use the Tractor Manuals button at the top right of the page to go to that area.

You can use the on line AGCO parts books at: https://apb.agcocorp.com/

You will need to enter B IB C to get that one to come up, or enter 79001543 in the book code box (that is the number of the parts book for those tractors, be sure you look at the right drawings as that book is not just the B parts).

My boys C is 12v with a mag. Generator is still there, but not hooked up. He runs it a LOT in the summer and maybe has to charge the battery once. I really should get one of those mini alternators and make it charge 12v.

mini alternators?, is it a kit that replaces rhe generator? i need to look that up on the hosts parts. thanks for the ifo.

The original B used muffler that fit under the hood, with a small pipe coming up thru the hood. C's used a round muffler sticking thru the hood. Most B hoods have been cut for the C muffler. You can also tap the manifold and run a pipe up.
The arch cast axle is tough but not adjustable. The C axle was narrow, wide, or adjustable.

Most of these tractors have been 'repaired' over the years with spare parts. One of mine is a 1939 by serial number bute everything else is 1941 or later by casting dates or changes. And I know the PTO came off a C and the wheels off something else and....
