Unstyled WC brakes

Ok, because I found the brakes housing in the axle had oil in it and dripping out of it when I bought it, I have always kept oil in it. My question is, do the brakes really run in oil???? I have scoured the owner's manual, the IT manual, and the official Allis Chalmers shop manual, and none of them mention the capacity of the brake housing. There is a capacity for the differential, and the final drive, but not the brake housing. and there are seals on both sides. What say you????

The brakes should be dry. The lips of the seals face the oil (per the AC service manual). The oil is in the differential and final drive which have capacities called out in the manual. Sounds like you need to do a brake job and replace the seals. The good news is the oil may have things free so it will come apart easily.

Thank you for your reply... My mechanic friend and I are in the process of redoing the brakes (new shoes) and he has a lathe, so we resurfaced the drum (some deep grooves, he got most of them out) and are
going back together. I think the seals are ok, just some one mistakenly put oil in there at some point, and I did the same....We did clean out the housing as good as possible. I will keep an eye on it to see
if the seals do leak.

I suppose I am the only person on Earth who really appreciates the hand brakes on a WC. One was my main tractor from 1968 until 1994. They can absolutely stop and hold a tractor. I do not want to argue.i just stated my own opinion.

Maybe it's not the actual brakes folks don't like, maybe the fact that you can't actuate them with your foot.

On second thought I bet it hadn't been apart for so long that the seals were wore out and the oil was just what came out of the differential when on a side slope...I ordered new seals. We will once again take apart the left side of the axle...Haven't started on the right side, yet. The one car garage is too narrow.....
