Piston Question

I am getting ready to reinstall the cylinder head on my 5040 AC, the service manual says before setting the valve clearance to put piston 1 at top dead center but it doesn't tell you which piston is #1. Anyone know which one it is??

How can u be working on an engine and not know which piston is #1 ? I am amazed. do u know how to set valves ? #1 cyl. Is the front one.

Indeed it is, and I know that. Just letting people know that #1 isn't always where they think it might be, and Deutz is a good example.

Like Dr. Allis said, its not always the same plus i have never worked on a Fiat engine like this, I am replacing the head gasket and wanted to be sure i was doing it right

At a schooling for Deutz, their theory was that since their engine was used in lots of applications where a "front" couldn't designated, #1 counting began at the flywheel.

I may be wrong, but dont think 5040 used a Fiat engine like 5045 & 5050. Think that tractor was built in Romania by Ursa. Someone correct me if i am wrong.

Isuzu 2.3 gas engines also start from the flywheel end. Had both a chilton and Holmes manuals. One was wrong,
can’t remember which.
