Impulse trips on the fire mark but it likes to kick back & not start. Is there a TDC mark also? No starter , hand crank only. What year is it?

I'd set the timing so it tripped a tad bit past the fire mark and see if it stops doing that

What is the serial number? It will be needed to get the year. The serial number should be stamped into the transmission housing just ahead of the shift lever.

I found another mark. The fire mark must be for running advance. Problem is I can't retard it enough to fire on the other mark. Must be a wrong magneto. It has an H4 IHC mag on it.

If its a retrofit, check location of #1 TDC with distributor position to make sure you aren't off by 90, and check firing order 1, 2, 4, 3. IH distributor may have different firing order printed on it.

And I believe the rotation direction is the same for this magneto and the Fairbanks, but confirm by pulling distributor cap and hand cranking. Distributor should rotate clockwise as viewed when you are facing the front of the tractor.

Was it running previously like this, or is this the first time trying to start with this magneto?

sorry, my reply is confusing and it won't let me edit. Distributor rotation is clockwise when you are standing by the rear wheels and your eyes are pointed towards the front of the tractor, looking at the rotor! I think standard magneto nomenclature is rotation as viewed from the gear side just to add more confusion.

To prevent kick back the impulse should NOT trip at the fire mark or anywhere near it! It should trip at TDC or dead center, seen them marked both ways. I doubt that you are going to get enough adjustment at the mag to cure your problem but check by turning the mag clockwise or top out. If you can't get it timed you need to remesh the drive gear. At dead center then may drive lugs should be at 3 and 9 O'clock or straight across. To adjust tbe gear remove the governor. Once the gear is right you then remove tbe small cap under the wires and turn the mag backward so the impulse doesn't interfere until the rotor is pointed at the top inside terminal, this is number 1 and the drive lugs should be straight across to match the drive,,, (if you have the right magneto and it is assembled correctly) install the mag straight up in tne slots and it should trip at TDC and the spark will be at the fire mark when running,, again if you have the correct mag with the correct impulse coupling.

I alway trip the impulse coupling and then timed my b to the fire mark. Ran like a champ. And only hand cranked no issues. Did you have the mag a part?

There should be a CENTER Mark that shows in the flywheel through the inspection hole a few degrees before FIRE. I mounted my mag when CENTER was visible with mag gear just before #1 spark wire. I fully retarded the mag as much as the mounting could go and after some carb adjustments it fires on the second crank every time with no choke. This was after a full engine rebuild, and during tear down found the timing mark on the cam gear was one tooth ahead of the timing mark on the crank gear. I rebuilt it with the marks meshed together as denoted in the manual. Prior to rebuild it started hard but ran fine. This seems to have solved the starting issues entirely.
