Allis C starter spins backwards?

I am restoring my grandpas AC C tractor and have rebuilt the starter but having trouble with the rotation direction. I replaced the bendix, end plate, springs, brushes, starter button.

Its probably from a 6v positive setup but will be converted to 12v negative ground.

When I test the starter, it spins, but the bendix retracts instead of throwing out and it seems like it rotates backwards.

Anyone have anywhere to start?

Only way that can happen is if the field windings where hooked up backward or brushes hooked up backwards

I am thinking it is 90 degrees rotation on end plate. My cousin did that on Willys Jeep engine once.

if you install the end plate on the starter 90 degrees off it will in deed run backwards. I did that on my case 210b one time. I scratched my head for a few minutes. some starters have an alignment pin. no idea if an ac has one or not.

Thanks! Transferred to original end plate since the holes were a bit different - will try in the morning thanks!!
