can someone tell me the differences between the wc- wd - wd45 tractors?
and maybe what years they were made ,

which were the most popular?

WC unstyled from 1934 thru 1938.....styled 1939 into 1948...hand brakes. WD- 1948 thru mid 1953....foot brakes,hand clutch, hydraulic system with lift arms and live PTO....WD45 replaced the WD in mid 1953 thru mid 1957....more power and the rest of the tractor much like a WD.....diesel engine in 1955. All three tractors were different HP's with the WD45 being the most.
 
When I worked at an AC dealer from 72-84, I observed that the most numerous of the older tractors here in the central Fingerlakes were the WD, and D17. Of course there were some WD45's. No one was using a WC.
 
Based on production numbers/sales. The WC was the most popular model with the WD a very close second. In today's world I would say that the WD is by far more popular and useful than the WC based on the improvements already mentioned.
 
WC and WD used the same engine with a bolt on plate on the side.
WC the transmission sits back at the rear end
WD the transmission sits at the bell housing
WD45 engine is lager and does not have the bolt on plate on the side and has a curved shiftier.
 
Except it's the other way around.
WC transmission was at bell housing, long floppy shifter came up under gas tank, then back. Power lift between tans & diff. Trans had to be in forward gear & spinning to lift implement, no hydraulics.
WD trans next to diff, shifter came straight up, hand clutch ran in oil bath, just ahead of trans. Hydraulic pump between the two clutches.

Yes I have it backwards. But I had just got out of bed when I posted that and I new better since I own all 3 of those tractors. Plus I have a W Speed Patrol which is based on the WC tractor
 
I used to go fishing with Main after his eye sight went bad and he left the business. Never was at his business.
 
Back in there day. The WC was far more popular around here. The old unstyled WC could be found on all most any farm or consignment auction even in the late 70's in running condition.

My dad had a tractor repair business started in 1963. From what I can remember he had one or two more WC customers than WD. I only remember one WD45 and that was a diesel. My dad in 1974 bought a 1957 WD45 diesel for his baler. He wanted a tractor with power steering, live PTO, with direct start diesel engine. The tractor he bought turned up on a farm retirement sale 65 miles from home. My dad hated road trips so he must have really wanted that tractor to drive that far. He paid $1100.00. I still have it.
 
One other thing that hasn't been mentioned is that reverse gear in a WD45 is faster then reverse in a WD. I believe based on second gear instead of 1st.
 
WD's with the straight gearshift lever had a slower road gear and reverse. The last year or so of WD's (s/n 127007 and up) had a curved gearshift lever, which was a completely different transmission. Road gear and reverse were faster and low gear was a little slower. This transmission was also the same for every WD-45.
