Allis Chalmers WD vs. Farmall M

Hey folks, I have a 1940 wide front end Farmall M with live hydraulics and 3 pt hitch. I have never owned nor am I familiar with the old AC tractors. I have a guy who is wanting to trade me his 1951 AC WD narrow front end for the M. The WD has a 3 pt and hydraulics and is in good shape. With never having any dealings or experience with them, I don't know how good of a trade option this may or may not be. Would appreciate any pros and cons! Thanks

A model "WD" compares much closer to a Farmall "H" at 34 HP. The WD45 at 43 HP, if it has 14.9 x28 rear tires with fluid, comes a lot closer to an M or Super M than the Farmall guys will ever admit. The M is heavier to be sure, but if you use AC mounted equipment (plow, disc, etc) it can make an M look pretty bad in the field. I doubt that this M truly has 1940 pistons and sleeves in it. Surely by now at overhaul time it has been brought up to Super M or 400/450 compression and has a 12 volt battery on it ?? which could have the HP greater than 50 HP. Just be careful if the way you use your tractor requires HP, cause a WD doesn't match an M.

Gotcha, I appreciate the info. I did see that there was a bit of hp discrepancy between the two. About the only thing I would be doing
with it, like the M, is to run a mower and maybe a disc from time to time. He has a front loader that goes with the WD. I am not sure of
the overhauling of the M, I bought it from a retiring farmer who took good care mechanically of it I know.

i will take the M anyday before the WD. plus the M will out drag it no problem . the wd45 is a bit more powerful and still would not trade an M for one. they are also clumsy to get on and off, more so than the m. the w6 standard its equal is a lot more handier. i have these 3 tractors also and going by my experience.

I am seeing that the WD just doesn't quite match up even though it's a nice tractor. I am pretty partial to my Farmalls at this point!

Dad had an M and a WD. The M is larger but when dad hooked up the old MF square baler. His WD ran circles around his M.

What are you going to use it for?

I agree with you it all depends on what your going to be doing with it. Pulling a plow or disk I'd go with the M but for doing hay be it cutting or raking or baling the WD is to me better

I disagree, I have had M's and H's liked them but for general farm use I would take the WD all day long. Plus I have seen a many a hay rake run up the back tire of an M.

It would be used for some light mowing and raking and occasionally pulling a wagon but that would be the extent. I have a smaller IH 370 13' disc for light discing in small areas but don't know how well the WD would pull that so probably wouldn't use it for that.

Post this on the Farmall forum and I'll bet the answers will be the exact opposite. LOL

No bias here.

I'll say this. If you are a Farmall man, I'd stay with them. You know them and like them. The Allis is a darn good machine, maybe not the horse an M is, but I'd sure hate to see you do the deal and then not be happy with the tractor.

Couple small thoughts. Horsepower is hard to give up. Did you sit on WD? You sit on side and sit down low. And last you know what you have now, will you be happy with WD?. I would probably keep what I have, you know it.

(quoted from post at 16:21:37 09/05/20) For sure, the WD does NOT have a 3 point hitch, and I'll wager that the "M" doesn't either :)

They may have and aftermarket of home made 3 point. My Wd45 has a home made 3 point that works very well.

While I prefer Allis Chalmers I wouldn't trade an M for one I'd keep the M it's define toy more tractor. If your wanting a 3pt put a conversion on your M the WD never came with a 3pt so at best it's a well engineered aftermarket conversion or it's a cobbled farmer mess. The geometry of the conversion is very important if you want an implement to work correctly
