D15 Main jet adjustment

So I have got my old d15 up and running! Full ignition tune up and rebuilt the carb a tsx844.(all bought from this site) Spent a
couple hours in the ultrasonic cleaner. Setting the idle was straightforward using my tach meter Just adjusted for max rpm and
then richened it up half turn. Idle rpm is round 850rpm. On trying to set the main jet I get very little response on huge
adjustments! I ran it in and tractor died at 3/4 turn from seated. If i back it out from there I get no real noticable change
backing it out past spring contact. Never saw black smoke, might have gotten slightly less clear but not enough for a 20 yr dodge
tech to notice. The tachometer never showed a repeatable change of any kind either.
Any advice for a first time tractor owner just trying to do right and get by?

Sounds like you have something blocked in main jet passage. Our D14 will get rich after 3 turns from bottom or so and black smoke rolls. Believe you need to disassemble carb and do some cleaning.

Must be a old Series one D-15 ?? Idle speed is to be 400 RPM not 850 RPM. Idle mixture is the small adjustable screw and is usually 1 1/2 turns out for smooth idle. Main jet is the larger screw and with the throttle wide open screw in slowly until it begins to falter and then out 1 turn to start, then 1/4 turn more (at a time) until it doesn't stumble when you crack the throttle open while in road gear driving it around.
