D17 starting madness

D17 diesel new engine kit, rebuilt injector pump, rebuilt injectors,
1000 amp battery, new cables still no start with starter. Pull it cranks
immediately, anybody have any ideas or dealt with this before there
has to be a solution. Thanks for any help

Where I live, I would remove the starter and take it to an old fashioned starter/generator/alternator rebuilder and have the starter freshened up. FAST cranking speed is the key. Also, I'd have two 12 volt batteries of probably 800 CCA's to have a total is 1600 CCA's instead of 1,000.

Also BIG battery cables and a ground cable and HOT cable for each battery, not doubling up with one cable only to the starter and ground.

I was thinking maybe the pump was still the problem but I’m not sure.
Shouldn’t there be some smoke coming out when cranking it over,
there is no smoke at all, but I refuse to use starting fluid on one. I will
do the bigger cables and two batteries. Strange thing is my son has
one that is wore out has more smoke coming out the bottom than the
top and it will crank.

A diesel engine like that has to crank at least 150 RPM (I might be wrong, maybe 250 RPM) before the injection pump will deliver fuel to each injector and pop them. The faster it spins, the better. Has the injection pump been worked on?? the newer transfer pump style blades are better than the old original one-piece design.

Sounds like low cranking speed, and/or a worn injection pump hydraulic head. Stanadyne/RoosaMaster pumps usually have at least 1/2 full load delivery at cranking speed for engine to start. If the pump has the early type one piece blades in GOOD condition that won't effect starting long as the blades/liner/end cap are good. DON'T use the four blade set with the EARLY end cap!

You don't have enough battery. When mine was freshly overhauled, one 1K 12v battery just wasn't enough. I have a pair of the 1k batteries now with a 2/0 gauge cable to the starter. It will start down to -10 with just a tiny sniff of ether easily. It starts on the batteries only without the grid heater down to 30. I just hooked up the heater last fall but we haven't had any really cold weather to see how cold it will go on batteries and grid heater.
