crankshaft gear replace

I have a d 17 that needs a new crank gear. Local mechanic says this is a some what easy project. What else will I need to replace while I have it apart? Seals, gaskets? I appreciate the help.

You should replace the front cover gasket and crankshaft seal, possibly the oil pan gasket but I don't think so. Look the camshaft and governor gears over since it is unlikely that you only have one bad gear.

Well, I'd assume a new camshaft gear too, and better look over the governor gear, especially if it is the older style that drives the power steering pump, as it may be loose on the shaft. Pan gasket, timing cover gasket, front crank seal, valve cover gasket, some way to hold up the lifters when you pull out the camshaft. This isn't a bad job for someone with experience. It will be a big job for a novice. You'll need a torch and puller to warm up and pull off the crank gear in chassis. WHY does it need a crank gear ??

Decided to go with a local shop.Replaced crank gear, cam gear, front cover, pan gasket and a few other things. After about 10 hrs of operation I now have a oil drip near flywheel cover, possible crank seal. Hard to find a mechanic in my area that knows how to repair these old tractors. Local farmers have recommended a mechanic that knows his business and actually comes out to the farms on occasions. Invested a lot of cash in this old tractor in the last two years. Has been a good one,but now a money pit.[/i]
