D-14 starting problem

I am having a problem starting my D-14. About a year ago I replaced the plugs, points, cap, wires, points, coil, etc. It has been starting poorly but I got by until this summer when I have been coasting it downhill to start it. Then it started missing. Now it won't start at all. It appears that I have a poor spark when I take a plug out and a poor spark at the coil wire. I'm thinking my problem might be electrical. When I looked in the operators manual I realized it's suppose to have a positive ground and I have had a negative ground. I'm wondering if using a negative ground has screwed up something electrical.
I'd like to try a couple other things to get it running before I haul it to a real mechanic . Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated.

Generator or alternator 6 or 12 volts??
Dirty points or points that are not gaped correctly will cause that

6 volts and a generator then yes it should be + ground and that will help the spark a little bit since hooked up backward makes the spark just backwards across the plugs

check the coil wires. on negative ground the - on coil goes to distributor. On positive ground the + on coil goes to distributor. nothing
will screw up other than could be hard starting. makes absolutly no difference what ground is used when electrical is wired correctly. if
that dont fix it try another coil.
