When the engine is running and throttled up, the ammeter should show a charge. When you idle the engine down very slow the ammeter should dip below zero for a second and then release back to zero. Make sure it does this. If the voltage regulator doesn't release, the gen will run the battery down when the tractor sits overnite.

Original 6 volt positive ground or a 12 volt conversion? Generator or alternator? If alternator brand and type? Knowing what you currently have may get better answers on possible drains.

Advise not to mess with the regulator. If contacts are stuck, you may unknowingly jar them loose and not find the problem.
It's simply a relay contact that closes when the engine is running an opens when the engine is not running.
With the engine not running check for voltage on the generator armature terminal.
If you have voltage, you have confirmed stuck contacts. Replace the regulator.

ill be a week or so before I get to where tractor is will post with what I find thanks again to all who took time to give suggestions

We used to have JD 2040 with same problem and
the fault was leaking solenoid on starter
I am not disputing with Dr Allis but in my opinion if
the points in regulator were stuck then the tractor
would go on fire

A friend has a D15II [12 volt system] Once when he shut down the cut out side of the voltage regulator apparently stuck. The gen, VR, and some of the wiring turned into toast. We still don't know why the tractor didn't go up in smoke. This tractor has a rubber fuel line hose which runs right along where the gen wires go!
