I have one that has started smoking after idling a couple minutes, white smoke and pretty thick smells bat too.
My thought is head gasket or a problem with the head. Would I be close on my guess?

why guess?? pull the plugs out and look at them. reading plugs and a compression test is like a doctor listening to your heart.

Guess I'll be the one that breaks the news to you...there is coolant getting into at least one of the cylinders. To do a proper fix (no matter the problem) the head will need to come off. It could be a head gasket (likely), it could be a cracked head, it could be a cracked block or a problem with one of the sleeves or maybe something else I just haven't thought of yet.
You can check your plugs, that will tell you which cylinder is getting coolant in it and you can pressure check your cooling system and that will tell you what you already know... you are getting coolant into at least one of the cylinders. Bottom line is that you will need to remove the head and look then you will know what the problem is. Head gasket leak is not uncommon, which is good news.

break the news ...obviously it has a coolant leak. that is why i said to read the plugs then you know which cyl. is the culprit. plus look
in rad for big bubbles big troubles. and to do a compression check and yes it will require a tear down but need to diagnose first. plus a
good idea to remove oil pan and look for a leak over night with a tray.plus these posters never get back to what they find or have done.

I said I was going to do a tear down, I'll let you know what I find, I am not going to do a 180 mile round trip for a couple days to appease you.

i never asked you to appease me. all i said was once we give out advice we hardly ever hear what the problem was we give info on. not asking you for results now as i am a mechanic and have restored and still restoring, meaning all mechanical work which includes complete engine tear downs on these old tractors. and dont pull my advice out of the air either. i know what u said , its the other guy jumped in and made it sound like he was giving you the holy grail. its just nice at the end for a follow up on the problem when completed. thank you.
