twisted alxe splines D 15

well I was wondering why the snap ring was off its slot and just hanging there and when I did get the parts out I see the spline was twisted and so it wont slide far enough to get room for the snap ring to go on. real close but not quite there . so im not sure how it came off or how long its been off or whoever worked on it earlier left it off. and so I also don't see how far axle bearing goes on ? It looks like it not on far enough and I don't see a stop for it or a ridge ? I think the bearings are both good and seal looks fair but I have it apart I am going to get new. . Is there a point when you press the new bearing on that it comes up against a ridge like other shafts so you know its where it is supposed to be ? even though its a 615 I believe the final is the same as the agriculture D 15. So I m looking for a axle and I imagine the right and left side is the same part # ?

The outer bearing (in your picture) is against the shoulder as it should be. As for the inner bearing you do not " press the new bearing on that it comes up against a ridge like other shafts so you know its where it is supposed to be". Bearing preload determines where it needs to be. The inner bearing slides on the small end of the shaft allowing the preload on those two bearings to be adjusted with shims. The shims are located between end of the shaft and the heavy flat washer, which is held on the end of the shaft by a cap screw. This shimming for preload is described in assembly procedure in the manual for the D15s and other AC's using this type final drive set up.

From the parts books it appears the D14 and D15 used the same rear axle.

Jim has it right, that's how it goes together and works. I might be looking for another axle. I don't think twisting them like that is common and possibly that one isn't right somehow, not as strong as it should be for some reason. You could file or grind the splines on the axle or gear enough to get it to go together with the snapring but it might twist more in the future and possibly twist off. You are right, the bearing in the picture looks good.
