I've had my Dad's old WD-45 (gas) with a loader for several years and the hand clutch had gotten to the point where it wouldn't disengage. Plus, it was sometimes hard to change hears with the foot clutch, without grinding them, in which case, lifting the loader a bit would usually slow it down well enough to shift. After some internet research, it seemed that many tractors had the clutch & friction plates "freeze", if left parked awhile and when the hand and foot clutch were not disengaged. So I took the housing apart and yes, the plates were stuck. Pried the plates open and lubricated between the clutch & friction plates and the "dis" engaging of the hand clutch got much better-but still moves slightly at first. Since I had it open and the plate tolerance was .035, I removed 2 shims from each of the 3 places. My best guess is that there were 10 shims at first and since the cork gasket was shot, it is likely that the transmision oil has never been changed. it feels/smells OK. Is it worth my time and $$$ to replace the 17 qts. with SAE 80EP (mineral based) oil to get a little bit more improvement???
