wd 45 won''t move

Dad was bushogging today, and the tractor just quit moving. He said he heard sort of a grinding noise just before it happened. Pto works fine, hydraulics work fine. We tried to tow it in and the rear wheels won't turn at all. It was in neutral.

When running it just boggs and stalls if you try to move it. hand clutch position makes no difference. With the hand clutch disengaged the foot clutch should be able to be released, but it still boggs and dies.

Everything was working fine last time he used it.

I need some suggestions on where to start trouble shooting.

Thanks.

Talked to Dad again he says it more of a pinging sound than a grinding sound. Also the trans shifts into all gears normally. Wheels just won't move.

Your description of the symptoms are not consistent. You say
the PTO and hydraulics work fine; but the engine stalls when
you let out the foot clutch, regardless of the hand clutch
status.

Really?

If it runs with the transmission in neutral and both clutches engaged, then you probably siezed/shelled a bearing in the differential.

The engine didn't actually stall it bogged badly and I put the clutch back in before it did. It did this with the hand clutch in both positions. When we tried to tow it in neutral, neither rear wheel would turn. I know the hand clutch thing doesn't make sense, but that is what it did. The gears will grind if you try to force them just like normal, they are spinning.

Just a thought. I once had a pickup that had the little shaft that connects the spider gears slip out and bind up on a projection in the housing. Heard a moderatlely loud snap, but it was still moving, so I continued on my way home. When I next went to move it, I got about fifty feet and then it locked up. That would lock the diff and the output from the trans.

Have you checked rear end oil? Pinion bearing locked up or spider gear pin came part way out. MACK

Dad is notorious for not checking fluids, I will check, but I think maybe it is too late to just top it off. Think I will start by pulling the diff cover and see what I can see. Problem is it is still in the field.

are you sure its not stuck in two gears at once? that will bog her down and stall it. pull the gear shift and check.

I'd bet you'll find the rear end empty and the pinion bearings locked up. Take the lift arms off and remove the differential cover.

Yep, almost no oil, but much less metal in the bottom than I expected. We got it to move long enough to get it in the shop. The noise seems to be mostly on the right, so I am going to start by pulling the final drives off and checking the bearings on the axle. Still need to pull the trans top off to look in there. Can't do much else till I get my cherry picker back from a friend. It has set in the back of the shop for 3 years until he needed it, of course now I need it too, never fails.

Do you guys know who has bearings for this. I have a parts manual with the part numbers, but know nobody who can cross them over. Also want to do the brakes while I have it apart, so any source for brake parts is also appreciated.

Thanks again for all the help.

Use Google to cross the part numbers. Use Google to find the phone number for Rick Corder and have him reline your brakes.

If this site doesn't have parts you need I would try Sandy Lake Implement and ask for Brenda, the AC parts ace. Or maybe DJS tractor parts, they do only ACs.

Ok, got the rear end out, axle bearings are very worn but intact. After pulling the diff it looks like the bearings on the trans output shaft have basically melted down. Next step is split the trans from the rest of the tractor. The bolts that hold the rear of the frame to the rear end won't budge. P.B. Blaster and an impact make no impression on them any ideas?

You have a weak impact and too short of a breaker bar. I'd say a breaker bar with a cheater pipe at least 3 ft long should get it. Swinging room isn't much but you're going to take the rear wheels off anyway, so that will give you enough room. They will come out. Never seen one yet that didn't.

Brand new impact, they finally broke loose this afternoon. Will get it off and apart in the morning. What stinks is I go back to work Monday, could have used another week to get this fixed.
