Hello, I just joined this site. I bought this 1951 tractor just over a week ago and am having problems with the hydraulics going up or down. The previous owner told me that he never used the hydraulics. I changed the fluid which was very dirty. I am now able to make the arms go up but it is slow and jerky and there is a rattling noise coming from the pump when I engage it. I think the pump needs to be taken off and rebuilt. My question is, where do I find a company that sells a rebuild kit or the pieces needed to fix it? I am having no luck at all!

They are really nice tractors, I love mine.
I needed the owners manual, the service manual, and I&T manual.
First check the linkage and settings. The pump has settings for traction booster, hold and delayed lift. I think you want hold. Make sure it has all of the pieces and the linkages are hooked up correctly. You can also run some tests if you have a gauge.
If that doesn't work, take the pump off. A good cleaning may solve the problem. Or as soon as you open it up, you may be able to follow the trail of broken parts. They have pistons, springs, and cam followers which break and clang around.

If the hydraulics haven't been used in a while, that is normal, the jerking and noise should go away after cycling a few times. Did you flush new oil through the lines to the lift cylinders? Both mine do the same thing every spring after sitting all winter. As for the overhaul, normally if you remove the pump, disassemble all the plungers, springs and balls, flush it entirely with diesel and reassemble it will work just fine. The over use silicone for gaskets is the leading cause of hydraulic pump failures on these tractors, one little piece will get in a seat and cause all kinds of problems. Also, when you drain the hydraulic fluid there are three drain plugs on a CA.

I did flush and drain the system after I got the settings figured out. I think what I am hearing is broken springs making noise in the pump. I did use a pressure gauge it was only about 100psi. I will take off the pump tomorrow, if it isn't raining here again. Thanks for the tip about Sandy Lake for parts.

There were 3 big drain plugs that I took out last Sunday. And then Monday I read where the control has to be drained also. It was a 1/4" pipe plug needing an allen wrench to remove. I did ot see it the first time because it was covered with baked on hard oil! And I had to sick a phillips screwdriver in the hole to start the thick sludge to flow out! What a mess. thanks for the reply.

What did you use for fluid/oil? The oil in the drain pan looks like a lot more foaming than I would expect.

Probably a good cleaning will get it working those pumps get gummed up with moisture in them.I've seen the bushing in a cam roller wear out and it'll cause a lot of noise and the pump not to
work right.They also originally used 20W motor oil but I've also used regular hydraulic oil with no problem.

his is what I drained out! I put in tractor hydraulic fluid from Fleet Farm which is clear.

hen I first tried to get the hydraulics working Icould hear spitting sounds as if it was not building pressure correctly.

Update: I got the pump off today and just as I figured there were 2 valves frozen in place which I was able to free up. Also, there are 3 of the 4 pistons stuck in the pump. Only one of them was doing it's job! Now my problem is how do I free them? I would appreciate any tips or ideas on how to do this. The block has a casting code on the side which turns out to be May 22, 1951. The block was cast 4 days before I was born! I thought it was kinda cool and wanted to share it with you all!
