Just bought this tractor and had this problem from the get-go. If I try to start the tractor with-out plugging the heater in. The starter will keep turning the engine over. I have to take a battery cable off to stop the starter. The starter will not turn over if I don't the clutch pedal down but when I release the starter button on the dash and let the clutch out on the dash, the starter continues to keep turning over.
I replaced the starter solenoid and the starter button on the dash and it does the same thing.
When I plug the block heater in the tractor, the starter works just fine. Any suggestions to what the problem is. This on a AC 170 Diesel.

Starter drive and the splines it slides on may be oily/sticky/gummy?

Also, a combination of weak batteries and a hard to crank engine may make it more likely for a solenoid to stick.

agree with gummy drive. time to remove starter and clean and check bushings, oil the drive. the flywheel is kicking the drive out when it starts.

I had an MF 265 diesel do that once, found the heavy drive nose spacer washer was broken that limits the drive travel on the Delco starter. When that happens the drive travels too far, and solenoid can't shut off correctly. A new spacer washer fixed it, it's a challenge to change as it fits over the snap ring. Worth a look.
