Jammed gear/starter issue

AC B47

I have a 47 Allis Chalmers B that is stuck in 3rd gear. Can I go through gearshift and unjam or will I have to take the transmission control cover with shifting forks off to do this. This happened while rocking tractor to turn flywheel off bad teeth (have new ringgear ordered). A related question is about starter. This tractor has been simi-converted to 12 v (no alternator). The starter apparently was changed because is has a solenoid start. It doesn't appear that the bendix teeth are engaging fully, causing the outside of the ring gear to strip. The starter doesn't mount flush with housing, leaving about a 1/4 gap between starter and housing. Starter is a Delco 110747. I have a 42 AC C with button start I am working on and I can't tell any difference in starter lengths.

Those old ACs have two tiny pivot pins in the tower to engage the ball of the lever and keep it from turning. If you take it out be careful they don't fall down into the transmission. Could also be their slot is worn enough to let one fall out. That would allow it to go into two gears at once and lock up.
