I just bought an Allis Chalmers WD, and I don't know anything about it. I would like some information on it like how many were made and how hard it is to get parts for. I would also like to know what are the differences between a WD and a WD 45.

The WD had a 201 cubic inch engine, the 45 had 226 (4 vs 4.5" stroke, same 4" bore). The 45 had a taller head, distributer ignition, helical cut tranny gears, bigger carb, 3 disc hand clutch vs the WD's 2. The WD had a plate on the right side of the engine, the 45 did not. A few other differences, curved (45) vs straight (WD) shifter. Parts for both are easily found at yourlocal AGCO dealer or salvage yards.

Aaron, True, the "45" has the "tall" head, helical cut gear tranny and the distributer ignition. However, these features were "phased-in" on the WD's prior to the introduction of the WD-45. The "tall" head was introduced on the WD quite early (probably 1950) with Engine Serial #WD289000. The helical cut gear (curved shifter) tranny was introduced on the WD with Serial #127007 and the distributer ignition first appeared on the WD with tractor ser. #136318.

Scroll down to my response to James Rekus on 8/25/00. The WD Ser. #'s began with #7 1n 1948 and ended with 146606 in mid '53. The WD-45 Ser. #'s began in mid '53 with 146607 and ended in '57 with 236958.
