Allis C starter

I am having issues getting a starter to turn my tractor over. I put an
autolite on there that spins just fine on the bench, but will give me
half a crank on the tractor. I just tried a second starter i picked up
and am getting the same thing. The autolite starter is spotless
inside. I have used both a 6v and 12v battery. Connections are all
clean and ground is solid. Ring gear teeth look good and timing is
good. She starts for me on the 3rd crank with the handle. Any other
suggestions?

worn bushings in the starter will allow enough play to "jam" the armature against the pole magnets and cause binding or a short when the starter bendix engages to the flywheel and torques the entire starter assembly. There is no such load and stress on a bench test.

Take it to a starter shop and have a load test done on it to see how many amps its drawing too, after you check to see that you have clean connections and the correct gauge wiring to the starter and a very good ground.

I will keep plugging away at the starters that I have accumulated. I have been using cheap jumper cables direct from the battery to the starter. I am not sure of the gauge, but I would think it would be sufficient. Is there anything I can be over looking on the tractor side of things besides gear teeth?

I had a starter on my WD that the shaft was broken inside the bendix where a setscrew was counter bored into the shaft. It would work sometimes and at other times the break would cam the shaft longer and it wouldn't allow the starter to turn. Couldn't see the break until it came apart if I remember.
