WD45 Tractor with D17 kit?

All,

Looking at buying a WD45. When asked the owner about it he stated this, "The guy I bought it from said that he took it some were two years ago and had the engine taken apart and all tuned up. Now instead of maxing out at 1,500 rpm it goes to 1,700 rpm."

Is it possible he put D17 components in it? Is this common and if it is what would the HP be at the drawbar and pto?---Thanks

It's easy to do. Pistons are a direct swap. All it takes is the D17 spring to get the RPM. Figure 10 or so horse over a WD45.

So, the governor spring was weak, they replaced it with new and now it runs 1700 RPM, which is where it should be!!! A compression test would tell something. A WD45 should have 120-125 lbs of cranking compression pressure. A D-17 has 140-145 psi. Proper compression pressure test is done with the throttle wide open, all spark plugs removed and a battery charger on the battery to keep the starter spinning the same for all four tests. It is doubtful that OEM pistons and sleeves were used if it even got new pistons and sleeves. Some people represent an "engine overhaul" as a new set of rings, a valve job and gaskets. A compression test and a small inspection camera inside a spark plug hole would tell me if it was a 4 inch or 4 1/8" bore. If it only has 100 psi of cranking compression, it won't even have the 43 HP @ the PTO that it did from the factory.
