Allis b starter

I have a 1941 Allis b with a magneto and already converted to 12 v system. ( the ground is negative) It has a kill switch and a starter rod. Can I change that to a key switch only or a switch and starter button and how would I wire it. An image or photo would really help.

This is a good article that Rodney K. Thompson, AKA Rod (NH) has written up and put on his web site.

The NAPA Kit referred to is Echlin # SF139. Need a big heavy duty soldering iron or torch to heat up a large bolt to do the soldering of the threaded post. Some people have suggested drill and tap, but I think that might be a little on the weak side.

I am no electrical expert but I can say this, my B that I inherited from my father was switched over to a key switch. So I know
it can be done.

Ah but does it have a mag or a distributor?? One with a distributor it is easy to do the key switch but a mag since it is a stand alone system doing a key switch to spin it over and also shut it down is hard if it can even be done

I've converted quite a few old tractors to a solenoid and key switch starting system.

A garden tractor or small engine key switch of the type the shorts out the magneto to shut down the engine does the job on a mag-equipped full-sized tractor, as well.

Bob your right but would the common man know how to wire one of those up?? Up till you posted this I had never thought about a lawn mower ignition type switch.

I ended up going to Rodnh.byethost12.com. Plus I was able to see one on another similar tractor so I think I have it now. Thanks!

Very cool info. I don't know when/if I may use it, but still good to learn more stuff. I suppose that idea would work on other starter applications. Thanks Rod for sharing.
