I am looking for information on a three
position shift lever that is attached to
the front of the differential. Is this
some kind of disconnect for the rear end
or a high, low, neutral of some kind?
Thanks for any help.

the disconnect only has two positions and looks like this, if you have three positions, my
guess is maybe some type of hi/low

There is a worm gear on the drive shaft under the cover that is in front of the lever you were asking about, it is for driving the cultivator lift. This lever that disconnected the drive shaft was for lifting the cultivator with the tractor stopped, came in handy if you were up against a fence or something with the cultivator down.

That looks like a Sherman undee or overdrive. I think they had straight through, neutral, and under or over for gears.

From the bulge in the box under the shift lever it looks like there may be some gears involved under the cover plate. How about removing the cover plate and seeing? And post a picture of what you see please. Thanks

I have the same unit in a wartime WC...but it"s not running so I don"t know if it"s an over or an under.

It is a mechanical disconnect for the rearend (stops forward movement) but the mechanical lift for implements still works. Especially helpfull at end of rows wqhere there might be a fence row.

The picture JoeM posted is the disconnect I think, there is no bulge for gear under it, the other one has a bulge like it has an under or over drive plus probably a neutral.

Joe posted a picture of the original disconnect. The original post has a Sherman under or overdrive. Look at the link I posted to the advertising.
