Most likely 6 volt, positive ground similar to most automotive type electrical systems at that time.

Thanks. That was my thought too, but I sent the generator in for overhaul, and they told me it is neg ground, so now I?m confused as to what is right!

Generators can be polarized to either ground. They are likely set up with negative ground on their bench and telling you it is negative ground now. You will need to polarize it to positive when you install it.

If the generator has V.R. mounted on it that could be why they said it is - ground now due to some being solid state.

Oh! They did sell me a new solid state V.R. So that would change it to meg ground then? Thanks Bill

Yes is solid state good chance it is negative ground so you then have to go that way or fry the new V.R.

Being a former Navy E.T. I think about how thing are/where built. Old relay type V.R. did not care but solid state stuff you hook it up wrong and you let the smoke out the moment you hook them up. Just hook up a 12 volt system with alternator wrong and the moment you hook the last battery cable up the alternator will smoke. Don't ask me how I know LOL
