D19 4th gear

I am working on a D19 that I just discovered slips out of the 4/6 gear going down hill. Anyone care to tell me what could cause this and how to diagnose and fix this? Are parts available for these?

4/6 are speeds. The gear you have jumping out is 3rd gear in the transmission. The general cause is from Operators grinding it into gear all the time until the shift dogs get rounded off and then they slip out going downhill with a push behind them. Parts should be available in the after-market as they are the same as a D-17. Labor gets to be intensive at 30 hrs for an experienced tech.

[So what specifically is causing the problem. I have a parts book. Do I have to split the tractor behind the torque tube and what else do I have to do? I also have the service manual but seems very vague about what to do. Is the problem on the main shaft or countershaft?

Verify the problem. Shift the transmission into 2nd (3-5) gear. Remove all the bolts holding the shift cover on the top of the transmission. Note the left front and right rear bolts are special dowel bolts. Remove the shift cover and inspect the shifting lugs/dogs on each of the four gears. If you compare 1st gear (farthest rear) to 3rd gear, it will give you a good example of the damage, if this is the problem. You could have a broken shift fork, which will be obvious when you remove the shift cover. Split at the dashboard, remove lift arm housing remove rear wheels and axles and keep going deeper. Problem is on the top shaft, but I always replace bottom shaft bearings when I do one.
