Can I use a d-17 tach drive distributor on a wd 45, run cable , add gauge have a tach or proof meter on a wd 45 is this doable or has it been done? Very curious , would be a be a neat addition , I'm assuming ground speed would be off , or not? Please lemme know your thoughts thanks in advance Dusty

Everything will fit and work. Just be sure to be aware of the "backlash" of the governor gear to the camshaft gear.

I don't see why it wouldn't work. Might be cheaper to buy some kind of digital one from Summit or JCWhitnney. Ground speed would be worthless. Almost is on a D17. Tach is very busy and in a hard to read place. I use it for hours more than anything.

I did the same thing on my Farmall Super H, back in 1969. My local IH dealer's parts man had set aside a
used distributor drive gearbox for himself to put a tach on his H, and got a new tach for a 300/350 and a
drive cable. It's worked faultlessly except the one squared end of the cable rounded off and I installed
a new cable. The speedometer is even pretty close, just a percent or two off due to rear tire size. Oh,
and the hash mark for PTO rpm is 1750 on the tach but is actually 1650 on the SH.

I checked and the WD-45 and D-17 will be about 5% off on the speedo, due to 12-28/13.6x28 tires on the
WD-45 and 14.9x28's on the D-17.

I've got plans to put a tach on my '51 M too, think Steiner's sells the distributor gearbox, and the
tach. Wish we would have done that back in the 1960's when the M was #2 fieldwork tractor, main
chore/loader tractor, and it ran the Knoedler burr mill grinder to grind cattle feed from 8000 to 10,000
bushel of ground ear corn every year.
