AC sickle mower

May have a chance to buy a AC sickle mower from 1960s or 70s. Don't know what model # it is, but looks like it attaches to 3pt lift arms, does not use a top link, and has a tail wheel. also uses a hyd. lift cyl to raise cutter bar. Any one know what model that is and if that was a decent mower? Hope I described it, haven't looked real close at it yet.

Does it have a pitman (model 3) or a belt drive to a gearbox at the cutter bar- #7, model 80, or 82? 82 will have some white decals on them. All 3 of the pitmanless are more desirable- they can cut from vertical, down to 45 degrees below horizontal. Pitman bearings for the #3 are spendy, as well as the bearings in the pitmanless cross arm. Like $70 spendy- some years ago.

The only ones I find which are semi-mounted with a tail wheel are the #3 [definitely not three point hitch], and the 82-R, which was three point hitch.

My son got a quick look at it, he said it is a model 82, as he googled some pictures to compare. He said it was a 3pt mount. Thanks for the response. Are parts available for this machine? still looks pretty good as it was stored in a barn till about 9 months ago. Understand the place has been sold, so thought we may try to acquire it if still usable.

So far as I know, OEM parts are no longer available. But common items like knife sections, guards, hold down clips, etc. are available aftermarket. They're a great, rugged, smooth mower. I use a 82S.

Bob,

What model do you use your 82S mower on? I use mine on a WD45. They are a great mower. Just had to get one of the J clamps remanufactured that holds the mower on the side 150$ well worth it. --adam

Think its called an 82 R3 mower,I have one pretty good mower pain to take on and off the tractor. It uses stablizers like on an old Ford to hold the mower in position.

According to Norm Swinford's book, the 80-R3 was added to the line for three point hitch tractors. It didn't have a tail wheel. The 82-R was semi mounted on a three point hitch, and had a tail wheel.

Yea I have both the 80-R3 and the 82 rear mount some places I see its called am 82-R some call it a 82-R3 good mower but you need to have a tractor dedicated to it.
