I've been thinking about upgrading from my ancient Farmall 350 to a little more modern tractor. I've owned the 350 for 20 years and have learned all its weaknesses and it has one issue that may soon lead to it being worthless to me (PTO). Farm estate auction coming up has an Allis 160 on it - simply says low hours and its looks like a tractor from the 1970s - not especially clean but it also doesn't look like it been used on a loader. Any known issues with these? Are they especially hard to find parts for? I don't know if it has the 10 speed or 6 speed transmission. Just looking at it I would guess it has the original tires with a little less than half tread.

Probably easier to repair the 350 PTO. If I recall the 160 does not have independent PTO clutch like your 350 has..

What is there about the 350 that's not repairable?
The One-Sixty/160 was a great tractor in its day. Made by Renault in France. Bullet proof Perkins engine. But now parts are a problem.
If you can buy the AC cheap, it may be interesting, but I would never get rid of the 350 for the AC.

On my 350 way down deep in the transmission it knocks when running the PTO. My understanding is there is a bearing that goes out requiring a split of the tractor to get at it. When I bought it the transmission had about 5 gallon of water in it so all the lower bearings and gears were running in water for years. When I had 90w in it everything was fairly quiet - although it did knock occasionally when running the baler and turning sharp. Changed the transmission fluid to the lighter Hitran and it knocks all the time now when the PTO is running - even with nothing hooked to the PTO. The only PTO work it does now is on an IH 1200 sickle mower and we are getting leery of using it for that.

Seems like the easy fix would have been to go back to gear lube.
