The C runs!

After soldering the tank and sealing it with por15, cleaning the carb, cleaning the points, and plugs, buying a cheap battery, and changing the oil and filter, it started right up. BUT the oil pressure gauge never registered any pressure. Tappets are in need of adjustment, lower engine sounds OK no unusual noises. it did not smoke except at start up it was black for a second then no visible exhaust. It has sat for many years, the drain oil was dirty but no water or sluge was noted. I put NAPA 10w-30 in it with a new napa filter.
Any hope of getting the pump to prime without splitting the tractor to repair the pump?

Take your filter off and see if it's got oil in it. If so it must be pumping and maybe gauge is stuck. Or you can take the gauge off and spin it over and see
if oil comes out. If no oil in filter fill the filter housing with oil and some in the filter and it should prime itself. Sure worth a try!!

easy way to prime the pump is to remove the filter, place a gas line hose over the stand pipe, fill the hose with motor oil, let it seep down some and add more oil, start the engine to see oil come back out the hose into a can, shut the engine off and replace the filter. Re start the engine and check oil pressure on gage. This pump is (NOT) self priming.

Thanks for the help, I took a 10' piece of 1/4" clear yellow gas line that I use on snowmobiles and siphoned it full of oil, then pushed it over the oil filter stem and repeated it once more. I put oil in the upside down filter till it was full.
After putting the filter back on and starting it up I have oil pressure! It was up in the normal range at half throttle but after it ran awhile the pressure dropped some. I could maybe go to a straight weight oil instead of 10w-30. Drove it around awhile and everthing shifted and worked well. It sure is a snappy little tractor, the govenor responds well to the throttle postition lever. Now my goal is to convert it to wide front this winter.

Most likely filling the new filter with oil gave it the resistance to raise the pressure on start up. The oil drains out as it sets quite fast if the filter is not plugged.

If the bearings are worn these engines can have very little oil pressure. I have seen one run for years with the needle nearly on 0 when warm. They have flow, but because
they are loose they don't build up pressure. As long A you have some needle movement you are probably good.
