Converting to 12 volt ??

The Allis C I purchased has electric start that is of course 6 volt. I see field coil kits available to convert to 12 volt. Is that all that is needed to switch the starter over to 12 volt?
My tractor does not have the generator or the mounting bracket. I want to intall a single wire 12 volt alterator on it which is a simple wiring harness to build. I rewired my 4010 JD to 12 volt from 24volt with a new starter and alternator. It works very well. Just learning and asking if anybody has done this?

No need to up grade the starter they work just fine on 6 or 12 volts. Most of my tractor are 12 volts but most still have the 6 volt starters on them and have for decades

Like Old said, no need to mess with the starter. It'll do just fine for years on 12v.

Yes, your starter needs nothing to work. All you need is a 12 volt coil with a built in resistor at Carquest about 26.00. I like the the mini one wire altinator
by Denso, you can order on eBay for about 55.00 free freight. You can use the amp gauge that is on the tractor just hook up opposite to the way it's
hooked up now and it will work correctly. I may have a bracket if you need one. Should be easy to make the belt adjusting piece. I just finished a Allis G
and it's 12 volt.i think I have a picture. I didn't even use a gauge I just went straight from alt. to the battery wire on the starter. Hope this helps.

your resistor is still probably on your tractor. just put it before your 6volt coil and install your one wire alternator hook it to the amp gauge and your ready to go. vey easy and really a must for these old tractors. starter could care less. just remember a good starting rule. after 5 seconds stop the starter. again for 5 seconds. if it don't start then you have a problem. good luck

This tractor does not have a distributor, it uses a FB magneto. It is a 1943 Allis C so most likely came with a magneto. I'll I would need is to charge the battery and maybe some lights eventually. Thanks for your replies. My dad had electric start on his B Allis and his WC. The WC would brake the drive spring on the starter once in awhile.

Use smaller battery cables like say the 2 gauge you find in auto parts stores. That tend to lessen the blow of the bendex flying out
