WF - engine re re

My Dad is planning to pull the engine out of his '49 WF, will the engine clear the front casting with the shaft for the hand-crank removed or does the front casting have to be loosened and pulled forward? Thanks.
 
IIRC you pull the cotter pin holding the spring in place, and just push the shaft forward. Don"t have to remove t.
