wd front axle

im finally ready to get back to my 1949 wd, its not a bad tractor with a new engine on it and some small issues that need ironing out, but the major thing is the front end, its a wide front tractor, and at some point the tractor got dropped out of a airplane or something, the mount that has the 3 bolts on the front of the casting under the radiator are ruined, one is even broke out of the bottom of the casting the other 2 have pulled the threads completely out of the casting, its had some repair by chicken poop welding which of course didn't hold, i think ive figured a way to fix this, it will mainly be a light duty enjoy tractor, im injured permanently so my working tractor days are over, but now i have a 'tractor collection', that way the wife wont get the idea to sell them, now i can fabricate a piece of 4 inch by 3'8ths steel to wrap around the whole front casting, using the bolts on the sides of the casting to locate it, after grinding the chicken poop off flush with the casting, the original triangle axle mount could be cut and welded to the bottom of the new steel, followed by welding a plate over the weld for reinforcement, that should hold up to anything this tractor would ever do, now before i do that, what about just converting the tractor to narrow front, whats involved with that? im not afraid of narrow front tractors, i grew up using them, and know what they can and cannot do

Narrow fronts are easy to find in salvage yards. Swapping is easy...use blocking/hoist to support the front of the tractor...remove the 4 bolts on each side of the side rails. Disconnect the steering knuckle (remove pin). Loosen one of the side rails all the way back to the axle. Pry the front casting loose and slide the casting forward. Helps to have a hoist to handle the unit. Then slide the new front end into place, connect the steering knuckle, and tighten all bolts. I did one just last year. My hoist has a jib crane on it with a second chain hoist on it, so I used both at once.

Not sure where you are but I have all the parts you would need to swap it out to narrow front. I have most of a WD that I got for the engine so it is just siting here

If you loosen the left frame rail you won't get "wet" from the hydraulic oil at the belt pulley opening in the right rail.

google took me to right in the middle of the big lake lol, that's nice country around there, about a 2 day run each way from here, i used to over nite at Camden, when i was running to eastern Iowa and western ill.

Back when I was pulling mobile homes I made it into NM once or twice but that has been years ago

im in the central mountains right at the very edge, its still the same, hot, dry, and the best green chili that can be had

I pull half a double wide into the town where they did all that nuke stuff. Losalomos pr something like that

thats Los Alamos, it was top secret when they were working on the atomic bomb, the other site where they blew it up trinity site is about 60 miles west of me, makes you wonder how much radiation is still around
